The Volvo S60 and Acura TLX are two excellent choices for those looking to purchase a new luxury sedan. Both vehicles offer a variety of performance and technological options for safety and entertainment. They each seat five passengers and feel spacious despite their sedan size. Both vehicles are priced similarly at their base model level and have excellent handling along with identical wheelbase measurements.

Despite their many similarities, the Volvo S60 and Acura TLX also have some differences. The Volvo S60 has much better fuel economy, unbeatable safety ratings, and many more options for engines and transmissions, along with better performance ratings

Fuel Economy

The 2016 Volvo S60, when equipped with a new inline 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, earns excellent fuel economy – 26 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway*. The newer four-cylinder engine is highly efficient and equipped with a stop/start system which automatically engages in stationary traffic. When foot pressure is released off the brake, the engine automatically starts up again. This system keeps the Volvo S60’s engine extremely fuel efficient. The Acura TLX gas mileage, however, achieves less efficient ratings – 23 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway*.

Safety Ratings

Volvo enjoys a solid reputation of manufacturing extraordinarily safe vehicles since 1927. The Volvo S60 aces safety inspections conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), as it earned the highest rating possible for each category of crashworthiness, including a “superior” rating for front crash prevention. The IIHS awarded it a “Top Safety Pick+” for 2016. It also received five-star safety ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) in front and side crash tests.

The Acura TLX, while it earned adequate safety ratings, only earned a “marginal” rating for small overlap front crashworthiness, a new test introduced in 2012, and did not earn the same top safety pick award from the IIHS. The Acura does offer a number of technological safety options that customers can add to their vehicles, including lane departure warning and brake assist.

Performance Ratings

The Volvo S60 offers sixteen different options for engine and transmission combinations, including their fuel efficient 4-cylinder engines. Customers can also choose from Volvo’s five and six-cylinder options with many transmission variants - 6-speed, 8-speed, as well as front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. The Acura TLX offers seven different trim options, but only two different engine and transmission combinations to choose from - the 2.4 L 4-cylinder 8-speed automatic or the larger 3.5 L V6 9-speed automatic. All-wheel drive options are also available on the Acura.

Volvo’s S60’s power ratings are much better than the Acura TLX - when comparing their base engines, the Volvo achieves more horsepower and has a higher torque rating. The Volvo turbocharged four-cylinder engine roars at 240 hp at 5600 rpm, compared to the Acura 206 hp at 6800 rpm. The S60 is rated at 258 ft.-lbs. torque at 1500 rpm, while the Acura’s torque rating is 182 ft.-lbs. at 4500 rpm.
